Apple recently dropped the 3.5mm audio jack from the iPhone 7, so now it’s time to pick a great set of lightning earphones for this baby. Do you know how to distinguish good earphones from lots of expensive but useless garbage? Basically, you start by making sure your lightning earphones are the latest 3^rd generation version, otherwise you will have a much higher chance of ending up with a, “bricked” set of earphones (No sound coming out of the earphones) when IOS is updating.

Why am I talking about 3^rd generation? What’s the difference when going from the 1^st generation to the 3^rd generation?

1^st generation Vs. 3^rd generation

Actually most of the lightning earphones currently available in the market are 1^st generation. There are 3 steps to determine if yours are 1^st generation: NO microphone, no silica gel covered lightning port, and no APP will appear that allows you to test the sound quality. Those are the biggest differences when comparing 1^st generation with 3^rd generation. Here is a quick visual summary:

First, you must confirm that your lightning earphones come with a microphone.

Next, you will need to check to make sure your earphone’s lightning port has a silica gel covered buffer on it to absorb and reduce friction.

Finally, if you plug your earphones into the lightning port, an APP will pop up for debugging and future iOS updates.

Apple did not authorize those functions for their 1^st generation lightning earphones. Oops!

If you have a pair of 1^st generation earphones, then be careful! Nearly all of them do not meet MFi certification and you will almost certainly end up with dead lightning earphones once iOS updates for the first time.

There are a few 2^nd generation lightning earphones out there on the market, and if you insist on finding a pair of them, just pick a set without the microphone. Maybe they are great to you, but you can’t call or answer the phone with that 2^nd gen model.

Just keep those 3 main points in mind when considering your next purchase and we hope that it’s useful and saves a huge headache with dead earphones but also helping you find a great set of earphones in a very confusing market full of earphones.
