In today’s fast-paced life, electric scooters have become one of the ways for more and more people to travel. When choosing a scooter, in addition to appearance and performance, weight is also an important consideration. This article will introduce the weight of each part of the scooter and recommend 4 of the lightest electric scooters, hoping to help everyone choose the electric scooter that suits them more easily. Let’s learn about these lightweight and convenient electric scooters together!
How heavy is an electric scooter?
The weight of an electric scooter depends on its build quality, battery size, motor power, and additional features. Typically, electric scooters weigh between 9 and 27 kg (20 and 60 lb).

Lightweight model
|
These scooters typically weigh between 9 and 14 kg (20 and 30 lbs) and are designed with portability in mind.
|
They are easy to carry, fold and store, making them ideal for urban commuters who need to combine scooters with public transportation. However, these scooters may have smaller batteries, shorter range and lower top speeds.
|
Medium weight model
|
Mid-weight scooters weigh between 14 and 20 kg (30 and 45 lbs), striking a balance between portability and performance.
|
They usually come with more powerful motors and larger batteries, and are meant for longer commutes or slightly more challenging terrain. While they’re still portable, they may require more effort to carry for longer distances.
|
Heavy duty models
|
High-performance scooters designed for off-road use or long-distance commuting may weigh more than 20 kg (45 lbs), and some models may even weigh more than 27 kg (60 lbs).
|
These scooters come with more powerful motors, larger batteries, and additional features like suspension systems and larger tires, so they are larger and less convenient to carry. The 8-inch to 11-inch models we currently use are heavy-duty models, with total weights ranging from 28 kg (62 lbs) to 68 kg (150 lbs).

Factors affecting the weight of electric scooters
Battery
The higher the battery capacity, the larger the size and the heavier the weight. Almost all modern electric scooters are equipped with lithium-ion batteries with a voltage between 36v-72v. Typical urban commuter vehicles are usually equipped with 36v, 48v, 52v or 60V batteries, or even large 72v batteries, and usually weigh between 2kg (5lbs) and 10kg (22lbs).
Motor power
A single electric scooter motor weighs about 3 – 6 kg (6.6 – 13.2 lbs). However, electric scooters can have either single or dual wheel motors, each with independent power output. Scooters with more powerful motors require sturdier frames and larger batteries to support them, which adds weight.
Tire
Most e-scooters designed for urban commuting will have tires with a diameter of 21.59 to 22.86 cm (8.5 – 9 inches). However, off-road scooters are usually larger and heavier, and tend to have larger 25.4 cm (10 inch) tires to keep the scooter balanced when tackling rough terrain.
There is another difference in the tires that can be installed on e-scooters:
- Pneumatic tires: 0.45 – 0.50 kg (1 to 1.1 lbs)
- Solid tires/cellular tires: 0.70 – 0.90 kg (1.54 to 1.98 lbs)
Our current 8-10 inch (20.32 to 25.4 cm) models are mainly pneumatic tires, and tire weights range from 0.8 kg to 1.4 kg (1.76 to 3.09 lbs).
Suspension system
Most electric scooters come with one of two suspension systems: spring coil shock absorbers and hydraulic suspension.
Some scooters have only one suspension system (usually a fork design for the front wheel), while others have one or two pairs of springs (hydraulic) in the front and rear suspensions.
A heavy-duty spring coil shock absorber designed for an 8-10 inch (20.32 to 25.4 cm) electric scooter wheel fork weighs about 0.2 – 0.7 kg (0.5 -1.5 lbs). A single hydraulic suspension weighs at least 0.70 kg (1.5 lbs).
Frame
Most electric scooters are made of iron frames (low cost, but relatively heavy). Aluminum alloy is a strong but relatively light material. A few high-end models may use carbon fiber, which is lighter but more expensive.
Can I take an electric scooter on public transportation?
Bus
Buses can often accommodate folding electric scooters due to their compact size and light weight. However, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the specific rules of your local bus company ahead of time. Some may require folding scooters, while others may restrict riding within the bus.
Check the bus company’s guidelines, make sure your scooter is in good folding condition, and be considerate of other passengers.
Train
Trains generally have more relaxed rules on luggage, but it is wise to confirm the rules of your chosen railway company in advance. Most trains allow folding scooters that meet size requirements, but battery safety is essential.
Research train policies, make sure your scooter fits within size restrictions, and secure the battery to prevent any safety hazards.
Subway, light rail and tram
Many of the same rules that apply to passenger trains also apply to other forms of public transportation, such as subways, light rail, and trams. When you take your e-scooter on these modes of rail transportation, make sure it is in the folded position and away from any aisles or other seats.
Unlike normal train travel, there may not be crew or train staff to assist you, so always check the regulations before you travel.
Airplane
Air travel with an e-scooter requires careful planning due to airline safety regulations. Please contact your airline in advance to learn their specific requirements, especially regarding battery standards and baggage fees.
Talk to your airline about removing the battery as directed, and be prepared for possible additional charges for checked baggage.
Cruise ship
Cruise lines often allow electric scooters, but be sure to check their policies beforehand. Folding scooters that meet size and weight requirements are usually allowed, but ensuring the battery is safe is critical.
Contact the cruise line to learn about regulations, ensure your scooter fits within size restrictions, and prioritize battery safety for a worry-free experience.
